SOCK HOP at the
Gulfport Casino Swing Night
( Click any photo to see a larger version )
This was a fun-filled, jam-packed evening of swing dancing, 1950's-style!
Saddle shoes kicked up the rhythm... poodle skirts twirled... dancers turned
out in their fine fifties fashion to hop the night away.
Bowlers and greasers were out in force, as were poodle girls, blond bombshells,
and... someone even reported seeing Elvis in the house! (He was nominated for
a Best Costume prize, but never came forward to claim it!) The night started
with an exciting swing-and-stroll-dancing lesson, taught by Sam & Christine
(who was filling in for the vacationing Allison). When it came time
to dance, a huge crowd of sock hoppers was ready to swing! Music included
a variety of Rhythm-and-Blues, Rock-and-Roll, & Pop hits from the 1950's to the early 1960's,
plus a selection of 50's jazz hits, ballads, and assorted fun songs.
In addition to the usual Shim Sham, Steal Dance, and Swing Ruedas, dancers
did the Stroll (see photos below), the Twist, and even the Hokey Pokey (you
put your left elbow in... see photos below). Best costume prizes --
including bowling shirts, a classic car (the small version), stuffed pink
& white poodles, and free Swing Night passes -- went to Randy & Sherry,
Victoria, Ruth, Carla, Virginia, Diane & Brent, and grand poodle winner, Angelica.
Carla, pictured below holding the hoop, took home top prize -- a bouquet of carnations --
in the shortest hula hoop contest ever held. Later in the night, we danced a birthday jam for Jenny. Enjoy the photos! --Sam
